Make and Validate DMARC Entry | Strengthen Email Security with AiTrillion

Make & validate the DMARC entry

Important note:

Starting February 2024, email providers like Gmail and Yahoo have enforced stricter authentication requirements. All bulk senders are now required to implement DKIM and DMARC authentication to ensure reliable email delivery.

AiTrillion strongly recommends configuring DMARC along with DKIM to maintain compliance and improve inbox placement.

For additional details regarding these modifications, refer to our blog post titled: "A Guide to Google and Yahoo Email Authentication Changes in 2024."

Introduction

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is an email authentication standard that works on top of DKIM. It allows domain owners to define how receiving mail servers should handle emails that fail authentication checks and provides visibility through reporting.

DMARC helps:

  • Prevent email spoofing and phishing

  • Improve email deliverability

  • Protect your brand reputation

  • Monitor unauthorized email usage of your domain

DMARC offers three primary policy configurations:

  1. None: Signifies that emails should be treated normally even if DMARC fails. This is akin to not having a DMARC record, yet it allows leveraging DMARC's reporting features.

  2. Quarantine: Specifies that emails failing the DMARC check should be directed to the spam folder upon delivery.

  3. Reject: Indicates that emails failing the DMARC check should be bounced and not delivered to the recipient.

Selecting a DMARC policy of "Quarantine" or "Reject" necessitates having a proper DKIM record configured for the sending domain. Failure to do so could result in all emails from AiTrillion failing the DMARC test, leading to their placement in the spam folder ("Quarantine") or complete blocking ("Reject"). Ensure DKIM is set up for all sending domains before implementing a stringent DMARC record.

To initiate DMARC implementation, it is advisable to commence with a policy of "None" to avoid impacting deliverability in the case of misconfiguration. Subsequently, monitoring DMARC reports will provide insights into the potential impact of adopting a stricter policy.

To make these entries in the DNS record, navigate to your domain provider's website and access the DNS records section.

Visit the domain provider's website. You can refer to the screenshot below for details:

Godaddy.com

Step 1: Log in to your GoDaddy Account

Step 2: Navigate to the DNS Management

Step 3: Add a TXT Record for DMARC

Step 4: Set Your DMARC Policy

Step 5: Save Your Changes

Namecheap.com

1. Having logged into the Namecheap account, choose Domain List on the left and click on the Manage button next to your domain:

2. Navigate to the Advanced DNS tab from the top menu and click on the Add New Record button:

3. Set Your DMARC Policy.

4. Save Your Changes

Bluehost

1. Log in to Bluehost

Navigate to bluehost.com and enter your credentials to log in to its dashboard.

2. Locate your domain

On the Bluehost dashboard's home page, find the domain you want to add the DMARC record to, then click the Manage button, as highlighted below:

In this example, we are adding the record to the domain partnerflare.com.

3. Manage DNS

Click the DNS tab, as shown below:

Now you will see the DNS section, where you can create a DMARC record for your domain.

4. Create the record entry

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, where you can see a section for the TXT record type.

Click the Add Record button.

Then enter the settings for your DMARC record. Make sure the host record is set to _dmarc, TXT value is set to the record generated above. Click the Save button. Now you have added the record!

For other domains

Create a TXT record with a Host or Name of _dmarc at your DNS provider and input the following value for the Value or Record.

Be sure to replace the email address in the example with your own:

Host/Name
Value
Record Type
_dmarc
v=DMARC1; p=none; pct=100; rua=mailto:youremail@yourdomain.com
TXT

It is crucial to replace the email address in the example to ensure receipt of DMARC reports. However, depending on your email volume, the specified email address's mailbox might become overwhelmed or reach its quota. Additionally, since DMARC reports are sent in XML format, they can be challenging to interpret. Therefore, it is highly recommended to collaborate with a DMARC monitoring solution capable of processing these reports and offering more comprehensible and actionable insights.

Note: To check whether the DMARC record is validated for your domain, you can use this online tool.

Important notes:

  1. Always configure DKIM before enforcing DMARC.
  2. Improper DMARC configuration may affect email delivery.
  3. DNS propagation may take up to 48 hours.
