The Refer a Friend earning activity allows you to reward customers for bringing new shoppers to your store. By offering loyalty points for successful referrals, you can encourage word-of-mouth marketing while growing your customer base. This article explains how the Refer a Friend earn points activity works and how to set it up so both referrers and their friends can benefit.

Follow these steps to set up Refer a Friend in the Loyalty Program:

Step 1: Go to Loyalty Rewards> Set up program > Earn points. Then click on Refer a friend.



Step 2: Fill in the details according to your requirements and click on Save / Update.



Select reward type

Choose the type of reward you want to offer to the customer who refers a friend.

Available options may include:

  • Discount code
  • Loyalty points


Discount value

Set the reward amount or percentage for the referrer.

Example:

  • 100% discount
  • $10 fixed discount


Approval period

Define the number of days before the referral reward is approved.

  • 0 days means the reward is approved instantly after the referral purchase is completed.
  • Useful for avoiding fraud or waiting for return/refund periods.


Minimum purchase amount

Set the minimum order value required for the referral reward to apply.

Example:

  • Customer must spend at least $50.

Set expiry

Enable this option to automatically expire the reward after a specific number of days.

Example:

  • Reward expires after 30 days.

Applied to

Choose where the reward discount can be used.

Options may include:

  • Entire store
  • Specific collections
  • Specific products

In this example, the reward is applied to Specific Products.

Skip referral rewards for partially refunded orders

Enable this option to prevent rewards from being issued if the referred order is partially refunded.

Skip referral rewards for cancelled orders

Enable this option to prevent rewards from being issued if the referred order is cancelled.

Referred Friend Reward

These settings define the reward for the customer who is referred.

Discount value

Set the reward amount for the referred customer.

Example:

  • 5% discount on their purchase.

Minimum purchase amount

Set the minimum order value required for the referred customer to use the reward.

Example:

  • Minimum order value of $500

Step 3: If you want to show a special 'Refer a friend' button, then enable the same from the appearance settings under Refer a friend. You can also customize how the button or pop-up is shown on the website




Here is the chronological order of how friends receive discount codes when the store is referred by one friend to another using the loyalty referral program:-

  1. Customer 1 refers your store to Customer 2.

  2. Customer 2 will receive a link through email or whichever channel was selected by Customer 1

  3. Customer 2 will click on the link and visit the store.

  4. A popup will be displayed with the discount code on the screen of Customer 2.

  5. Customer 1 will receive loyalty points when Customer 2 makes a purchase from the store.


Important Notes

  1. The Refer a Friend earning activity must be enabled for customers to earn points for referrals.
  2. Points are awarded only after the referred customer place the order and receive the order.
  3. The minimum purchase amount (if set) must be met by the referred customer for points or rewards to be issued.
  4. Points are credited according to the approval period configured in the referral settings.
  5. If a referral reward includes a discount code, the code will follow the expiry and usage rules defined in the setup.
  6. Referral rewards apply only to future purchases and do not affect past orders.
  7. Changes made to referral settings apply to new referrals only and do not impact existing or completed referrals.
