Sync Shopify Metafields with AiTrillion and AiTrillion Custom Fields with Shopify

Introdcution

Keeping your customer and store data consistent across platforms is essential for effective personalization and automation. With AiTrillion’s metafield sync feature, you can seamlessly connect Shopify metafields with AiTrillion custom fields, ensuring data flows smoothly between both systems.

This functionality allows you to sync data in either direction—whether you want to pull Shopify metafield data into AiTrillion or push AiTrillion custom field data back to Shopify. You can also enable two-way sync to keep both platforms automatically updated in real time.

In this article, you’ll learn how to set up and manage metafield sync between Shopify and AiTrillion, along with best practices to ensure accurate and reliable data synchronization.          

Note: The metafield syncing will only work with respect to the customers.

How to set up metafield sync between AiTrillion and Shopify?

Here are the steps to sync Shopify metafields with AiTrillion and AiTrillion custom fields with Shopify:

Step 1: Go to Customers >> Custom fields >> click on the Create button.

Step 2: You can set up the settings as per your requirement. To learn more about the available settings, click here. Now, click on Enable meta field sync. There are a few settings available, which are as follows:

1. Metafield Name: This is the unique identifier for the metafield in Shopify. Enter the exact name that will be used to store and retrieve the data. Example format: Wholesale.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
2. Metafield Already Exists in Shopify: Enable this option if the metafield is already created in Shopify. If not enabled, AiTrillion will create a new metafield using the provided key.
   
   Sync Direction: Choose how the data should sync between AiTrillion and Shopify:
1. Sync both ways (Shopify ↔ AiTrillion): Keeps data updated in both systems automatically. Any change in one platform reflects in the other.
   
2. Shopify → AiTrillion: Data flows only from Shopify to AiTrillion. Useful when Shopify is your primary data source.
   
3. AiTrillion → Shopify: Data flows only from AiTrillion to Shopify. Ideal when managing data mainly within AiTrillion. Turn this option on to link the custom field with a Shopify metafield. Once enabled, any data stored in this field can be synced between AiTrillion and Shopify.
   

Note: If you are using a checkbox in a custom field, you need to map it as a multi-line text in Shopify, as there is no checkbox option available for metafields.

Step 3: Once you edit the settings, click on the Save button.

Once the metafield has been added in Shopify or AiTrillion, the data will be synced.

Note:

1. It will take 10-15 minutes to sync the data.
   
2. The previously added metafield data will not be synced. Only new data will be synced after the settings are enabled.
   

Check the data added to the metafield in AiTrillion

There are 2 ways to check the data added to the metafields

1. Filters
   
2. Customer details page of AiTrillion (For specific customers)
   

1. Using Filters

Here are the steps to use the filters to check the meta fields data added to the customers:

Step 1: Go to Customers >> All customers >> click on Add filters

Step 2: Click on the custom field that you have created. For example, I am using the Wholesale form.

Step 3: Add the conditions as per your needs and click on Done button.

Step 4: Click on Apply filter.

Now, you will be able to see the customers according to your customers. You can create the segment and engage those customers. To learn how to create a segment, click here.

Customer details page of AiTrillion

Here are the steps to check the meta field data on the customer details page of AiTrillion:

Step 1: Go to Customers >> All customers.

Step 2: Click on the search bar, enter the email you want to check the metafield for, and then click on the customer’s name.

Step 3: Click on the Custom field tab, and you will be able to see the data that has been synced through Shopify or the custom fields of AiTrillion.

Important Notes:

Ensure the metafield namespace is exactly the same in both Shopify and AiTrillion to avoid sync issues.

Once a metafield is created, the namespace cannot be edited. You will need to create a new metafield if changes are required.

The metafield sync will only apply to new data after enabling the setting. Previously added data will not be synced automatically.

If the metafield already exists in Shopify, make sure to enable the “Metafield already exists in Shopify” option during setup.

Choose the sync direction carefully (Shopify → AiTrillion, AiTrillion → Shopify, or both ways) to prevent data conflicts.

For checkbox-type custom fields, use multi-line text in Shopify, as metafields do not support checkbox types.

Ensure the data format matches on both platforms to maintain accurate synchronization.

Avoid frequently changing sync settings, as it may lead to inconsistent or overwritten data.
